Hello, I bought yesterday my first bike, a 1978 yamaha it 250. The guy started the bike on compression and ride it a little (cause the kick start is missing i need one...) so we take the bike in a trailer (bike on the side) to transport it to my home. Arrived here we tried to start the bike on the compression but in first gear with clutch engage we cannot roll the bike. I ear the air in the piston... I would like to know if i'm missing something or if something happend during the 25min transport to my home. I cheked the wire and the clutch is moving...On a french enduro forum someone answered me to change the transmission oil cause the clutch could be jammed at cold. what you guys think about that?

Wich oil I need to use and how much (750ml is that information correct?)

thank you very much

Most of the time, if the bike has been sitting for a long time, the clutch plates will be gummed together. I have a 77 IT250 and when I got it, the clutch was useless as it was stuck together. What I did was drain the fluid, take the cover off, make sure the clutch is aligned per specs, put the cover back on, filled it up with tranny fluid and got her started. Then I rode it around with the clutch handle in and once she got warm, the engine started revving higher and higher until they plates all popped open. Then the clutch worked. That's one way of doing it as you end up using the old plates.

Another way is to replace the friction plates with new ones but more money and time are involved.

Forgot to mention, if you're going to bump start it, try keeping it in neutral, running really fast then hop on and pop it into 2nd. That always works in a pinch. Running with it in gear with gummed friction plates est tres fort.
