I am getting some kick back from my mr175. I swapped out the stator, rotor and coil, and put in a martek coil/cdi and 77 cr125 rotor and stator. The instructions say to set the timing 1/4" back on the stator. I currently have it so, and the stator is turned as far as it goes.

My understanding is that it kicks back because the timing is too far advanced, is this correct. If so, how can I correct this, or do I need to scrap the Martek? If it is not correct, since I have it set appropriately per the instructions, how should it confirm how much to advance it?

It usually starts after one or two kicks. Once it is started, it runs fantastic: great throttle response, doesn't ping at high rpms. If you try to start it after it is warmed up, or if it doesn't start after the first couple of kicks, the kickback can be a killer.

Wow, that's a seriously coarse / imprecise adjustment recommendation. For what it's worth, I adjust mine (complete '75 CR ignition) in rotor increments of about .010", roughly the width of the 'F' mark line.

If you just want it not to kick back so much, rotate the stator CCW a small amount and try it out. If you want to dial it in to optimum performance - as I surely would if I'd been fortunate enough to find a Martek ignition - you'll need a battery-type timing light to get at least some idea of the Mototek CDI's advance curve, and a dial gauge.
