Vintage Dirt Bike Q & A

Hi guys,

thanks to those that helped with the Vintage Jerseys - I have 2 on the way now. Should of asked the forum in the first place I suppose.

I am now trying to find the open face helmet mouth guards/face protectors as used in the late 70's. I am not after the small Jofa or JTracing one but the larger wrap around one - probably the easiest way to explain it is the one that made an open face helmet look like a Bell Moto 3??? Is this clear? Hope so???

Any help much appreciated.

Are you looking for the hard plastic ones that snapped to the helmet as apposed to the ones that were a 'strap' and just had teh hard plastic over the mouth? We used to call the hard platic ones 'face fenders' . I remember Jofa and JT racing making both types. or

well done - the one on the left is the one I am looking for. The solid that attaches straight to the helmet and not the strap type. Any idea where I can get one?

I see them on E-bay from time to time, or try AMS. Are you going for the 'vintage' look when you ride the Elsinore? I know a few guys who tried that, after a few get offs the decided their heads are worth a little more than looking old school. MD

not so much for when I am riding but for the show side of things. I also don't think I go fast enough to hurt myself when I fall off but that could be famous last words so I had better be careful!!!!!!

I was just wondering since I see alot of guys just getting into vintage and they like that 'old school' look, but after a season or so they decide it's not worth the risk and end up with 'modern' gear. You may not be going fast, but what about the others on the track. Just a friendly warning

I've heard of people falling on other people, even in bike runs.

I was one of those who did the "old school look" the first year I got into vintage racing, and you're right Oregon, the second year I went to modern gear. This decision was partly made due to starting to race post vintage longer travel bikes that went faster and higher.

Even when I race the vintage classes now I still use the modern gear, just for the safety aspect of it. Hey, we're not THAT old yet and there are a lot more years ahead of us that will be more enjoyable free from the confines of a wheel chain or someone following us around wiping drowl from our chins.

I certainly agree with the wheelchair comment - not there just yet but I also can't see why you can't have a bit of fun with the class either - exactly like you said you were doing in your first year Nathan. I still have the latest pants, chest protector, gloves helmet etc but also can't see anything wrong with having the period correct gear on a show day - after all I won't be using it all the time.

There is also the fact that I have spent so much money on the new gear (boots and all) that I have to use it to justify to the better half!!! I also see, thanks to the forum, that you can get some of the "modern" gear in period correct colours etc as well?

You can get these occassionally on eBay. I got one brand new but the type of plastic must be susceptible to aging because it just snapped in my hands. Keep the open face helmet for show and try and pick up a full-face helmet that is plain white. I was very lucky and got a new Shoei with a very plain old school design that goes OK with the "vintage" gear.

Something to keep in mind for futrue reference guys if you have any of these plastics in your sheds that are broken contact me i work in the hobby industry and we carry a product called ebalta it is a resin plastic an can be very handy in fixing things like this so they dont go to waist


Just a point on this ebalta it sets inside five minutes so if you buy some be aware of this
