Vintage Dirt Bike Q & A

Need some help on a 79 CR250. I got the bike as a basket case and now I have her all together but I don't know where the hoses are suppose to go on the carb and there seems to be a place for a hose on the engine case as well. Anyway I guess I need to know where each hose should go and what they are for..I think a picture would help but I don't have a repair book to look at.

The bike does run...I removed the spark plug and put a small amount of gas in,,re-installed the plug and she fired right up....Anyway please help.

There are three vent hoses from the carb; one on each side and one lower down from the float bowl. These - and the passages inside the carb - must open to the atmosphere and be un-clogged. This is not necessary, but if you are a neat-head you may choose to route these over the back of the motor and down through the loop on the rear motor mount under the air box. Remember wherever they go they can get clogged with dirt so keep them checked. A larger hose attaches to a white L-shaped plastic connector that vents the transmission. The hose is larger in diameter than the carb vents and can also go back over the motor. Don't lose or break the connector as it is unavailable from Honda. Well I guess that explains the vent hose...so I now I need to find out why I am not getting gas to the engine.. I also noticed some gas dripping from the bottom of the float bowl vent tube.

Tha bike has been apart for years and just sitting. I was supprised when it fired up with a little prime of gas to the head.

Thanks for your help and any clues on the carb. would be great.

If you have gas dripping from the carb I would worry that the engine is getting too much gas not too little. If the needle valve is worn or dirty and/or the float height is to high then you will get flooding and gas coming out the overflow. If you flip the carb over and let the floats gently close the needle valve the distance between the edge of the carb and the top of the float should be 19mm.
