Vintage Dirt Bike Q & A

just unloaded my latest "deal". Based on what I have read here I feel that this will be a nice trail bike for my old bones. I know nothing about these bikes. I got away from bikes around 75 and just decided to start back up again. Anyway, this is a 2 stroke engine correct?See no oil injection tank so I assume gas/ oil is mixed. What is the ratio? Bike doesn't run. need to do the usual fire, wind, fuel thing this weekend and start carb surgery. What manual is the best? Where is the best place to get parts? need carb kit, points, coil, fenders, grips and levers for sure maybe more but hoping not. any help and all opinions wanted. Except "shoulda' got a CR" please. I'm too freakin old and too freakin tired for a gonzo ride. Just a nice putt through the country side (at least for now, then maybe I will get a CR.) Thanks, Mike

32:1 mix using modern oils. For parts, I use the ‘bay, online vintage suppliers, like Vintage Elsinore or Red Racer. Don’t forget Swap meet online here or at other sites. You will likely have to use a good used part sometime. Be careful when buying MR parts. Many are exchangeable with CR parts, but others—such as points—are not. I just picked up a new set of points at a local cycle repair/salvage shop. I have seen carb kits on the ‘bay for 73-74 elsinore CRs, but not sure if the parts are interchangeable with the 34 mm Keihin that should be on your bike. I just bought a needle/seat/o-ring set from Honda dealer for a whopping $38. Of course, they had to order it and he told me Honda only has 13 left in the U.S. now. Don’t know if that is true or not, but it is usually the o-ring on the seat that wears out and you can get a new one of those from any seal company.

Quick visual and the old girl looks stock. I see tell tales of someone twisting bolts on the engine and the preston petty rear is broken(classic over the back wheel break). It appears to have the original front tire still on it. All of the lighting is gone but, for what I want it's no big deal. I'll know more after a little close up examination this weekend. starting to feel like a 13 year old (in a 45 year old body that is)
