Vintage Dirt Bike Q & A

I am missing the nut, the spring, and the ball from my kickstarter arm mount. Not 100% that it is the right bolt either. Local Honda shop can not get all these parts. 1977 MR 175. It is a different style than my 1975 mr 175. Any suggestions?

As far as I can tell, three different kickstarters were used on the MR175's:

Type '1': single bolt for both arm pivot and clamp; basically the early CR125M kickstarter with the arm shortened to clear the up pipe. Arm is straight, foot is identical to the CR125M's. Also used on the MT125, I believe.

Type '2': separate bolts for clamp and arm pivot; knuckle is larger than above. Arm is curved, foot is longer than Type 1.

Type '3': very large cast knuckle unit w/clamp bolt; very short, big-diameter arm pivoting in cylinder in knuckle, rubber foot on arm.

Which do you have? From the photos I've seen it appears the Type 2 is the most common, but my '77 motor came with a Type 3 and I found a Type 1 (from an MR175) on eBay last year.

Here's some quick info, as I'm running late this AM.

96211-08000 : Honda ball bearing p/n (I think it's stil available)
28333-124-000 : spring p/n (I think this is available too, but are you sure it isn't still buried in the spring tube?)
06111-08003 : a Suzuki ball bearing p/n that (I believe) fits the MR arm
90012-360-000 : 'nut, kick arm' (this is the nut - even the p/n was hard to find)

Ray, Thanks for the lead on finding these parts. I was able to follow the link, and get the nut I needed at a reasonable price. It came very fast considering it came from Australia. I would recomend them to anyone. Also thanks for all of the help you have given me and others. I know you have answered the same questions more than once. I think there are a lot of old guys like me getting back in to bikes. Without the internet, and men like you and dogger (among others) it would be a lot harder to enjoy the sport.

No problem at all - I'm glad I saved that Tiaro link, which I found when searching for MR175 rings. I'm amazed at how quickly things get here from down under - the air filter I got from New Zealand took less than a week.

I agree - without the Internet, I wouldn't have been able to do most of the bike-related things I've done over the past couple of years.

Does the kickstarter work now?

I wanted to wait until I got the nut before ordering the bolt from the Honda shop. I need a new bolt as the old one bent due to not having that sleeve nut on it. I have a spare kickstarter so have been able to ride. Put on quite a few miles last week on trails, dirt roads, and some muddy rutted out hills with a lot of tree roots. I was able to keep up with the young ones and their new bikes pretty well. Seams to be running a little rich though. Going to try the exhaust clean out, and adjust the carb.
