Vintage Dirt Bike Q & A

I have an owners manual but the section that covers this is kind of vague. What is the easiest way to go about changing out the seals and where can I get any special tools, if needed. Any tips or tricks to make it go painlessly?

i just did my 79 cr125 they should be the same. this is how i do it and there are other simpler ways. anyway block the bike up and take the front wheel off. then drain the oil out of the forks, little bolt near the bottom of the fork leg. then remove the big nut at the top, there will be spring pressure on these but not much. then remove the allen bolt at the very bottom of the leg were the axel fits, don't loose the copper washer. loosen the bolts on the triple clamp and slide the fork legs out, you can now pull the bottom part off of the upper tube. on my 125 there is a wiper seal first you can just pop it out with a screwdriver. then theres a wire snap ring that need to be removed then pull the seal out. wash everything with solvent or something then reasemble. put a little oil on the seals before you put the tubes in. you can put a little sealer on the allen bolt at the bottom if you want, but i've never seen one leak. make sure you get it tight . you'll be riding in no time

The break the allen bolt loose on the bottom try removing the forks from the bike and turning the forks upside down. Place the top end of the forks on a block of wood on the floor while holding the fork vertically. Compress (pull down on) the fork to apply tension and have a partner remove the allen bolt with an impact. Using this technique there's no reason to remove the oil drain plug. Just turn the fork back over and remove the top bolt, it will have some spring tension on it so be careful. Now you can dump out the oil. You should also flush out the fork with degreaser to remove dirt and grime.
