Vintage Dirt Bike Q & A

Hey everyone. I just registered here after buying a 1980 cr80 elsie for 100 bucks. Now I dont know a thing about 2 stroke dirt bikes, but have been cafe'ing old 4 stroke hondas for a while over on dotheton.com So I figured I would give this a try.

First off, I noticed new parts for these bikes are nearly impossible to find. That concerns me, since like anything else I know parts will eventually wear out. So Here's what Im trying to find out (bear in mind I have no other cr-anythings about to compare to)

Reed Valve. Are stock replacements available anywhere? Searching the internet yeilds nothing. Will any other reeds be able to work with some fitting? Also the rubber boot on the reed block. Any options for that?

Air Cleaner. The original setup is long gone, and only a chunk of the plastic box remains. Can I just swap a uni pod filter onto it and fashion a mud/debris guard around it?

Factory Manual. I dont have one, and the only one i found on ebay is in england. Any other sources stateside?

Piston. I pulled the top end and the piston is in poor shape, and had been wearing badly on the exhaust side. Replacement is necessary I am sure, will a cyl hone work? Or should I go for boring over?

Last Resort Here: I see cr 125 elsinore motors are more abundant than the cr80. What are the chances I could put one in my frame? Any fabrication work to consider?

Obsessively check ebay for parts. They will come up. Be especially patient, and you'll find them at reasonable prices too. You should certainly find your manual there too. Don't be shy about buying another parts bike too, then you can peel off the stuff you want, and add to the parts sales to help other restorations and help fund yours too.

fore used parts you may have to wait till someone sells what you need. i needed half a year to get mine complete.


no aftermarket replacent reeds avaliable.


i´m using a twinair foam pod filter in the original air box.


wait till someone offers one, last winter were several offers at ebay.


bore to the next oversize.
replace all bearings and seals too. theese are all std. mashineparts and not very expensive.


no chance without welding.

I agree that eBay is a haven for parts if you are patient. I found that using microfische part numbers also help in your internet search as well.
