Vintage Dirt Bike Q & A

Hey all! About to get started on this project! Don't know a thing about rebuilding a dirt bike. Have the Honda Shop Manual and ordered my crank bearings, but having some real issues finding a complete gasket kit for the bike. If anyone has any leads on getting one send me a link! It would be greatly appreciated.

PS. Found an 83 CR80R gasket kit, will it fit, or did stuff change from 82 to 83?

no, it won´t fit. look at ebay.co.uk for the right kit.

Finally back on the CR80 resto after a long hiatus.....putting rest back together tonite...

Big question tho--need an "enrichener assembly" (choke assembly) for it--mine was broken and trashed.....Bikebandit had them up until last month...now not listed as available...

Anybody know Honda part number... for it or have a spare carb laying around with correct assembly for mine? thanks DOUG

OK--here most recent pics....

Please don't trash me for incorrect cylinder color!! I was leaving the motor alone as it was all original (even still has a new 49.50mm piston in it!) and wanted to leave it all original..So cleaned up all the motor nicely but the cylinder cooling fins had too much baked in red clay and 2-stroke oil to clean off so I had to sandblast it. So I painted it flat black engine paint for now...can go back and redo it when time comes.

ALSo have to re-install the chain guide/roller...paint is drying on it right now...unfortunately it did not get sent to paint shop with frame and tank and other parts when I found it in a wad of paper in the box I had my parts in...so called guy that painted it and we used every drop of paint up! So may try to do it with the Chrysler Industrial Red spray can since it doesnt show much under there and prob look close enough? I made a new roller for it out of some Delrin I had laying around and drilled and pressed a bushing into it--will leave chain guide in flat black primer for now and go ahead and install in a few minutes..

Still looking for side panels but that is proving to be either too impossible or too costly--hate to spend the $200 on all new plastics but may have to--despite fact front and rear fender in such good shape!

I also poured a few drops of 25:1 down the spark plug hole and the darn thing started on the second kick and sputtered nicely like an air-cooled 80cc should for a few seconds...

Now to fabricate and airbox lid and find a choke assembly for my carb.

ALso have to stencil the logo on seat yet.

lookin good do you have an airfilter? I am looking for something that will fit my cr80 just wondering what others are useing thanks, Craig

NO--but UNI makes one still for about $10 and I actually made my own out of foam from a lawnmower prefilter...and a little 3M glue....will buy a real one later...still looking for some cheap, OEM, decent condition side panels but I think that is not 3 things that can exist in the same sentence....

Hate to spend the $179 on all new repro but it sure would look good....D

IT'S ALIVE!!!

Still trying to acquire a choke off eb*y but dropped the old choke plunger in there and plugged it off with a rubber stopper, put some metal tape over the airbox for a temporary cover, and cut an old sponge down to put over the air element til get one.....darn thing started on the second kick and runs like a scalded cat! had to back the airscrew out another near 1/2 turn to clear up the upper RPM's and it ran even betta! will tune carb perfectly once I get the airbox lid fabbed up and a correct choke and airfilter...

All in all very pleased with the performance. Interestingly the entire bottom end is original 1980, as are the cylinder (original bore) and the head.....I just put a new piston and rings in(stock bore) with a very light hone of the cylinder to clean it up....very cool to see/hear a 32 yr old motor run that tight in essentially original condition!!

Anyways will keep trying to locate rest of parts and then run it out good on the road one day to get through all the gears and tune carb perfectly. Really like the little thing though...heard they had heck of a lot of power for an air-cooled 80cc and I agree it definitely delivers a good punch when it comes on the pipe...love to ride one with a hi-compression head and a pipe/carb setup....would be fun.......

Still waiting on the choke/starter valve from Thailand--was shipped on the 12th with a 12-18 businsess day timeframe--at day 12 right now.....keep you all posted...D

Yippee! "Starter Valve" showed up today from Thailand.....finally! Looks like a perfect fit...will install tonite after work. Th main differenc between it and OEM is the OEM was a brass threaded fitting--this one is black plastic. SHould work great. Letcha know.......

Now just down to needing a left side panel (found a right one finally) and an airbox lid--thinsk I 'll make out of aluminum though....and an air filter too. Then she done!

New choke from Thailand is in carb and works great. Got the OEM right side plastic panel off eb*y for $19 shipped and then cleaned up and fortunately is in better shape than looked in sellers pics actually--got to plastic weld 2 small cracks and put vinyl on number oval and we are down to just needing a left side panel and an air filter to be finished! will get some pics up of homemade aluminum airbox cover in a day or two....
