Hi folks this is my first time on and am glad this forum is here. I bought my son an old 1984 CR80 project bike. It is missing the sub-chamber for the exhaust. Can anybody tell me if this a must have part on the bike. The previous owner removed the chamber and filled the butterfly area up with RTV or some rubber-based goo. Are they even available anywhere? Also plastic parts are all boogered up and I am looking for suppliers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Might be better to post on this forum http://www.vintagemx.us/cgi-bin/swapmeet.cgi . '84 was the first year for the ATAC system (subchamber thing) and it was iffy at best. The parts are no longer available new.

You can run accross them on evilbay, but in good working order they are expensive. To eliminate the system you either need an aftermarket exhaust (DG may still have it) or just put a plate/gasket over the opening. I'm doing an '84 CR125R like this right now. I'll see if I can get a freeze plug to fit the opening to seal it off, then install the subchamber and no one will know.

Good luck with the project.

Jim

Try XRmini Racer for the fenders, just used one of thier mudder fenders on an XR80 project & the match is very close. You can try to polish out your other plastics. I also see that Meier still has rear fenders available (ebay). You may find side covers in after market as well.

Are you still going for a stock look, or if that didn't matter........

OK, since stock is not totally important. Go with the Meier rear fender ($60) and the XR Mini Racer "Mudder" front ($50). You could run an oval front fender (VMX - Peter is a good guy), those run $30, but are as close to original as possible. DC Plastics carries the original square number plate for $35. Also carries the side panels for $65 and Decal set for $22. BE advised that the DC plastics are a rough finish and will require sanding & polishing to get a smooth finish.

For the fenders be sure to tell them that the original color is flash red (orange). When you do the frame repaint be sure to use automotive paint (rattle can) and tape off all the ignition ground points.

As far as exhaust, DG still has the '85 silencer ($104) but no main pipe/manifold. Put an ad on VintageMX.us for the exhaust system.

Complete plastic kit http://www.dcvmx.com/xcart/product.php? ... at=&page=2

Good luck!

Hey Jimmy is the frame color also flash red? Is that available in a spray can? I have a regular paint rig and compressor.

The '84 is Flash Red. Just painted mine over the weekend. We took a camara reading (computer shot) and the color came out to a MOPAR red color. Was a perfect match & my guys put it into a spray can for me. Took the full 5 oz of paint to cover the frame & subframe in 2 coats. I also polished out the plastics and they matched very nicely. Match was perfect to the NOS fenders I got for it.
