Sounds like the rectifier is bad. Probably why the battery was bubbling. It should regulate when the battery is charged and stop current flow.

Should I get one used (http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem ... 0688954252) or new?

Up next, the speedo. The cable was missing so I replaced it. Now, when I get above 10-15 mph? It makes a whining noise. It's sudden, and doesn't really change with speed. I have yet to test it for accuracy, will probably do that tomorrow.

The speedo is accurate. I sprayed some wd40 into the unit and the whining is gone. Next order of business, the "mod" part of restomod. I want to make a luggage rack. Has anybody made one? I have a general plan, but I'm not sure whether I want to make one from scratch or modify a premade one.

So I've lost spark. New plug, newish coil, flywheel is good, but the points have continuity when open. I figured that must be the problem. I removed them and when they're off the bike they don't have continuity when open. Then I found that the stator coils are grounded. It seems like they shouldn't be right? Do I need a new stator or maybe can I get new insulators? ( current rubber is fairly hard and cracked.
