The larger stainless spokes that Buchannan's sells look great, but are the really needed for Vintage/Pot-Vintage racing? Do your stock spokes hold up well?

Unless you are wed to the authentic OEM parts - Excel rims and larger stainless steel spokes are the way to go. Looks great plus you get peace of mind.

Probably depends on how much air you get. I'm still running stock spokes and rims. But certainly no harm in beefing things up.

If you have good OEM DID rims and spokes I firmly believe you can run with those. However if like me you have all cracked front rims then when you are forced to buy a replacement I think the extra cost (and weight?) is justified. BTW, I have been told you can get a wheel builder to weld a cracked rim but I wasn't 100% comfortable with that concept.

I'm going to mount new Excel rims. I was just debating getting the larger stainless spokes vs. new original spokes. :D

If you're going to replace the rims and spokes anyway I'd definately go for the Buchanan spokes. Probably cheaper anyway.

I just ordered heavy duty spokes for my elsinore 74-75 CR125 from Buchannan's. I ordered 8 gauge they are for the CR 250 but they make them for the 125. I really don't think the little extra weight is going to make that much difference. Please don't weld up any rims that just doesn't seem safe.

My two oldest sons are pro FMX riders and both have used oversized spokes but reverted back.
The single problem they had with them is they were always loosening up. If spokes are kept tight under NORMAL use, will they break? I jump big (considering I race a '74) and have never had a problem with breakage on my new and old bikes with stock spokes.

Rick,

I was all set to get the bigger spokes when I saw Ricky Carmichael's CRF on the cover of a magazine and noticed how small the spokes looked. I'm sure his spokes/rims were probably changed after each event, but the only air I'm getting right now is from the oxygen battle after I pull off the track. LOL So, I was wondering if they were really needed especially on an old 125. Thanks for the reply. :D

I'll bet those old DID rims will start cracking and breaking up before the spokes let go. That has been my experience anyway.

I know everyone's experience is going to be different but I break my stock spokes on my 74-75 CR125 like pretzels. I have been running 8 guage stainless with no problems at all now. I never had any spokes come loose but I maintain my bike well too. I also run Exel Rims. I have a friend that was having the same problem breaking stock spokes so he bought stainless spokes same gauge as the stockers & he hasn't had a problem since.

No matter which gauge spokes I use I'll be runing either Excel or Sun rims.
