Vintage Dirt Bike Q & A

Hi All
Im posting this in the hope someone will have some advice for me.
I am sripping down my bike to have the swing arm and frame powder coated. All was well until trying to remove the pivot shaft from the swing arm.The nut is off and the wheel and swing arm move as it should.
I have soaked the spaces where the dust caps are in wd40 but cannot knock the shaft out, trying with a drift and hammer.
It appears to be siezed on the bushes within the swingarm itself.
Someone has stated I will have to saw the bolt to release the engine as the shaft runs through the rear engine mount.
any suggestions before this drastic action is taken as it is the final straw

My swingarm bolt on my 74 Cr250m was really stuck...I saturated it with penatrating oil overnight....then heated it w/ a propane torch...and really hammered on it. Give some heat a try.eL

I had the same problem with a 1979 CR250. I soaked the bolt from both ends with oil for three days and used a press to get it to move. My goal was to save the frame and the bolt. I threaded the nut on part of the way so I could also hammer on it. After three days of tryin it started to move. Patience is all I can recommend. With enough oil it will move. Using heat is a good idea too. I scratched up the frame a bit but I was able to rethread the bolt and nut. Good luck!

going through the same hassles with my 78 resto except all swingarm, rear and front axles are seized. Have managed to get the rear axle out - and save the shaft???? - with the oil, patience and heat option. Appears to be the only way to go.

Will make sure the shafts all get regular greasing when it's finished as this is holding things up big time?

I had the rear axel of my '74 mt250 stick in there this winter. I gave it few too many friendly taps with the hammer and ended up flanging the end of the axel. Once I got it out I had to use a rotary tool grinder to take off the last couple of flanged treads on the axel to get the bolt back on.

So I would recommend hiding away all your hammers before you begin. So in the heat of the moment you wont be tempted to begin swinging.
