Vintage Dirt Bike Q & A

Hi All

Firstly hi to you all, just joined and my first post.

I have just bought today a CR125M, I have been told by the owner its a 1975 model, its in a really ruff state and I am looking at a long project ahead

Could anybody tell me how I can check engine/frame numbers to find out a little more about the bike?

I live in Perth Western Australia so its going to be fun trying to find parts but that makes the challenge fun.

Me again

Having gone through all the past post's I found the post on Frame/Engine number and mine looks like a 1975.

For my next question, I have looked at a lot of pics of the CR125m's, what I can't understand is my exhaust comes up on the left hand side where as all the ones that I have seen come up on the right. Is there something wrong about mine or did some models have this?

From the picture you posted, looks like you have your hands full. The pipe is supposed to come up on the right and was only
offered that way by Honda. I'm not aware of anybody offering an aftermarket pipe that crossed under the bike so I'm
guessing your bike has a "custom" pipe somebody fabricated.

Depending on how you want to proceed with your resto (rider/racer, original, etc) you will probably want to replace the pipe
with something that fits and mounts to the stock brackets if you still have them. Also, carefully check the work around the
rear shock mod to make sure it is sound. If the swingarm isn't reinforced properly, you are looking at a suspension failure.

That's half the fun though, isn't it? Taking a "basket case" that could otherwise end up in a junkyard and
bringing it back to it's former glory. My '73 250 was in very rough shape too and I ended up having to
replace a good percentage of the parts. But it was worth it in the end.

I took a closer look at the pic you posted and it looks like the original shock mount and pipe mounts are
still intact. A little work with a plasma torch and a grinder and your swingarm will be good as new. I'm
betting the same is true for many other parts.

Ultimately, you will have to decide after you strip it down, if you have a parts donor or a good foundation
for a restoration. Either way, it's a start and you are fortunate to have very good vintage Honda resources
right there in OZ.
