Ok, fixed this problem... this update is in case anyone else gets into the same trouble....
Basically I screwed up... Looking at all the pics in all the manuals it shows the correct way to fit the kicker, and finally i found the Clymer manual explained it, whereas the Honda one didnt. you need to fit it so that the tab that holds the inner spring sits at 12 oclock, then drag the other end of the spring down to the locating lug in the case. it then works properly
